THE HAMILTON AFFAIR by Elizabeth Cobbs

Updated: Feb 14, 2021

THE HAMILTON AFFAIR by Elizabeth Cobbs ** - I’m a huge Hamilton fan, so I had high expectations for this bestseller. Unfortunately, I wasn’t entirely impressed with the story, character development, or writing.

Things I liked: obviously, I loved the characters. I’m a sucker for historical fiction that uses real historical figures as the main characters. I also love a book that switches perspective, and this one switched between Eliza and Alexander in each chapter. I liked hearing about each of their childhoods and Eliza’s life before meeting Alexander because I knew very little about it prior to reading this novel.

Things I didn’t like: the writing seemed a bit immature for my taste and lacked a lot of depth. I definitely think I would be confused if I had no background knowledge prior to picking up this book. The political storyline and the war storyline were at times convoluted and brushed over so quickly that I had to go back multiple times to make sure I read it correctly.

After reading America’s First Daughter, my expectations for historical fiction in this era are now wildly high. My desire for reading about each founding father or president’s wife is still fiery! I just need a book with a little more compelling writing, I’m picking up My Dear Hamilton asap.
