LOVELY WAR by Julie Berry

Updated: Feb 14, 2021

LOVELY WAR by Julie Berry ** - A historical fiction romance set in World War I Britain and France, as told by Greek gods. This book on paper sounds like my new favorite novel, with historical elements, battle descriptions, love stories, and even a bit of fantasy mixed in. However, while the idea was perfect, the execution was less so in my opinion.

What did I like? The characters were charming, and I was interested to see how their stories ended. While I would say this was a plot-driven story, the characters did bring me joy. I think it addressed mental health and discrimination fairly well, although it did brush over these topics a little and it seemed rushed. The ending was a bit of a plot twist although I began to see it coming in the chapters leading up.

What didn't I like? The execution just really missed the mark. The subplot of the Greek gods could have been really compelling but I just was not that interested in their outcomes, although I did enjoy the way they told the story. I thought the book dragged in all the boring parts and sped through all the good parts, which was frustrating.

Overall, I love a good love story (or two) and especially one based during World War I. Picturing those trenches was something else, I can’t imagine being in the war or being in love with someone in the war.
